In order to purchase a handgun, an Iowa resident must obtain an Iowa Permit to Acquire ("PTA") if the resident does not already have a Permit to Carry Weapons.  A Permit to Acquire authorizes the holder to acquire pistols or revolvers; however, this does not authorize the holder to carry a weapon.  An Iowa Permit to Acquire is valid three days after the date of application and is valid for one year after the date of application (Iowa Code, section 724.20).  It is valid throughout the state.

To obtain an Iowa PTA, application is made at the Sheriff's office in the county of residence.  No training is required, but the applicant must have a clear criminal background check.
